Train down, fjord, then the Viking village

A guide takes you from Bergen by bus and train to Myrdal, down the Flåm Railway to the fjord, through the Nærøyfjord by boat and into a rebuilt Viking village at Gudvangen. Pick it for the train direction: it rides the line downhill in the middle of the day, which almost no other listing does.

Viking Village, Nærøyfjord Cruise & Flåm Railway

About this experience

Guided Fjord Tours runs the classic Norway in a Nutshell loop with a guide attached, and in the opposite order to most rivals. A bus takes you from its office in central Bergen to Voss, about an hour and a half, and you board the Bergen Line for the climb to Myrdal, a mountain station at 867 m with no road. There you change onto the Flåm Railway and ride it downhill to the fjord, with the five-minute stop at Kjosfossen on the way. In Flåm an electric boat takes you two hours through the Aurlandsfjord and the UNESCO-listed Nærøyfjord to Gudvangen.

Gudvangen is where the tour gets its name. The guide walks you round Njardarheimr, a Viking village built from 2016 and opened in 2017 (Viking Valley), where people in period dress cook, craft and talk about life a thousand years ago. Then the bus climbs out of Nærøydalen, stops at Tvindefossen and takes about 105 minutes back to Bergen. Only this listing and option 1 of the small-group day ride the train down; every other day trip on this site climbs from Flåm to Myrdal late in the day.

Three things to know. Food is not included: the listing's own lists contradict each other, and the notes say the guide points out where to buy it, so bring or buy lunch. The page also says the loop can run in reverse, Viking village first and the train last, and that from October to April stops or the cruise route may change for weather and ice, with Voss replacing Tvindefossen in winter. Group size is not stated, and it travels by bus rather than minibus.

An electric boat down the Aurlandsfjord and into the Nærøyfjord, under 500 m wide at its narrowest point.

  5. About 1 hNjardarheimr Viking village

A guided walk through the village at Gudvangen, at the foot of the fjord.

  6. About 3 hTvindefossen and back to Bergen

Tips before you book

  • Bring lunch or a card for Flåm. The includes list says food, the notes say it is not included: assume it is not.
  • Ask at check-in which way the loop runs that day. The listing allows for the Viking village first and the train last.
  • Views switch sides on the way down. Most guides say sit on the left going down, and everyone gets out at Kjosfossen anyway.
  • From October to April, pack for ice and wind on the boat deck. The operator may change the cruise route or the stops for weather.
  • Spanish speakers: this is the only listing on this site that offers a Spanish-speaking guide.

Frequently asked questions

Which way does the Viking village tour ride the Flåm Railway?

Downhill, from Myrdal to Flåm, in the standard order. The listing adds that the loop can run in reverse, with the Viking village first and the train last, so ask on the day if direction matters to you.

Is lunch included on Guided Fjord Tours' Flåm day?

Treat it as not included. The includes list and the notes contradict each other, and the notes say the guide points out places to buy food. You can buy food in Flåm, and Visit Norway says the Viking village serves a Viking lunch in its food house.

Does the tour run in winter?

Yes. The listing runs all year, with a winter variant from October to April: the photo stop moves from Tvindefossen to Voss, and the cruise route or stops may change for weather and ice. There is no Huldra performance at Kjosfossen in winter.

How is it different from the private tour?

The same operator sells a private version with hotel pickup and your own car and guide. That one runs the loop the other way, so it rides the Flåm Railway uphill, from Flåm to Myrdal.
