Flåm Railway tickets

A seat on the Flåm Railway costs less than most people expect. The hard part is getting one on a July morning, and knowing which shop to buy it from.

The Flåm Railway is a 20.2 km line from Myrdal, a mountain station 867 m up with no road, down to Flåm on the Aurlandsfjord. The ride takes about an hour. A ticket is bought for one departure, from one of four sellers, and in summer the popular trains go weeks ahead.

Below: what the fares are, who sells them, when to book and when a whole-day tour makes more sense than a train ticket. Fares come from the operator's own price list and Vy's route page, checked in October 2026.

The quick answer

Vy sells single tickets at dynamic fares in 2026. On the operator's 2025 list, fares were lowest from November to March and highest from May to September, and a return cost well under two singles; children 6 to 17 pay half, under-6s ride free. Buy at norwaysbest.com for a return from Flåm, at vy.no if you come by train from Bergen or Oslo. Book weeks ahead for May to September. Interrail gives 30% off a single, not a free ride.

How much is a Flåm Railway ticket in 2026?

Vy sells adult singles at dynamic fares for 2026, so check vy.no for your date. On the operator's 2025 list, winter singles were the cheapest and summer returns the most expensive.

No official 2026 price list has been published. The last full list is the operator's 2025 timetable and fares, valid to 31 March 2026, and it shows how the price moves with the season. Vy now quotes a starting fare for a single, which suggests dynamic fares rather than one flat price.

Fares change by season and by train, so check the current fare for your date on vy.no or norwaysbest.com. Two summer trains in 2025, numbers 1868 and 1869, were sold at the mid-season price, so compare the train next to the one you want.

Where do you buy Flåm Railway tickets?

From Norway's Best (the operator), from Vy, through Entur, or at a staffed station or the Flåm customer centre.

All four sell the same seats. The difference is what else they can put in the basket.

Do you need to book Flåm Railway tickets in advance?

From May to September, yes, a few weeks ahead if your date is fixed. From November to March you can usually buy on the day.

When a departure is full, the operator's customer service has no extra seats and suggests another date. That is the official line on the fares page. Travel writers who ride it every summer report popular trains selling out weeks ahead, and Flåm takes around 120 cruise calls a year. A big ship in port fills the midday trains fast.

Our rule: if you have one fixed day in July, book as soon as you know it. If you are in Flåm in February with a free afternoon, walk to the desk. The cruise ship post explains how to spot the busy days.

Should you buy a return ticket or one way?

Buy a return if you are staying in Flåm and only want the ride. Buy one way if the train is part of a journey to or from Bergen or Oslo.

The Flåm round trip is the simple version: up to Myrdal, a short wait, back down. It takes about two hours. The operator lists it as a round trip from Flåm, with the meeting point at Flåm station. At Myrdal there is Café Rallaren, open 09:15 to 18:00 from April to October; a lunch pack can be ordered online 24 hours ahead and picked up there.

One way is what most visitors buy, because the line is a link: Bergen or Oslo to Myrdal on the Bergen Line, then down to Flåm, then on by boat or bus. A return ticket is only cheaper per ride, not per day. If you have time, a one-way ride plus the two-hour fjord boat to Gudvangen gives you far more scenery than riding the same 20 km twice.

Can you use Interrail or Eurail on the Flåm Railway?

Not for free. Pass holders with an active travel day get 30% off an ordinary single ticket, bought at a staffed station, through Entur or by phone with Vy.

The Flåm Railway is a private tourist line, so a rail pass covers the Bergen Line to Myrdal but not the last hour down. The discount rules on the operator's fares page:

  • 30% off singles for Eurail and Interrail holders with an active travel day.
  • Where: a staffed train station in Norway, Entur, or Vy customer service on +47 61 05 19 10.
  • Not online: discounted tickets are not sold at vy.no or visitflam.com.

On the Bergen Line, pass holders pay a seat reservation fee; Interrail advises reserving on all Norwegian trains because they fill up. Phone well before a summer date: a discount is no use on a full train.

What do children, bikes, dogs and wheelchairs cost?

Children 0 to 5 ride free and 6 to 17 pay half. A bike costs extra and needs a reserved space. Dogs are free.

Cyclists who want to ride the Rallarvegen down from Vatnahalsen can buy the operator's "Hike or Bike the Flåm Valley" ticket: one way from Flåm, valid with stops at Vatnahalsen and Myrdal. Families booking a day trip instead: some listings set a minimum age of 4 or 5, so check before you pay.

Is a day tour better value than buying the train yourself?

Only if you are coming from Bergen. A guided loop includes three trains, a two-hour fjord cruise and a bus; bought one by one, those legs add up fast.

If you are already in Flåm, a tour is the wrong buy: a return ticket and the boat on its own together cost far less than any tour. From Bergen, the sums change. You need the Bergen Line both ways, the Flåm Railway, the Nærøyfjord boat and the bus from Gudvangen, and you need them to connect.

One honest point: the self-guided ticket package costs more than three of the guided tours. You are paying for someone to buy and connect the tickets, not for a guide. The comparison is in Norway in a Nutshell or a guided tour.

Which departure should you book?

The first train of the day or the last one. Midday trains carry the cruise and tour crowds.

In October 2026 the operator lists six trains each way. From Flåm: 08:20, 09:35, 10:50, 12:10, 14:45 and 16:00. From Myrdal: 09:30, 10:45, 12:06, 13:24, 15:55 and 17:09. In summer 2025 there were ten a day each way, from 07:25 out of Flåm; from November to March, four. There are fewer trains on 24, 25 and 31 December. Check the operator's timetable for your date, since it changes by season.

Skip the 10:50 and 12:10 from Flåm on a cruise day in July unless you enjoy elbows. The 08:20 is quieter and the light in the valley is softer. More on the season ahead in the 2026 fares post and the winter timetable post.

Frequently asked questions

Can you buy Flåm Railway tickets on the day?

Yes, at the Flåm customer centre or a staffed station, if seats are left. Out of season that is usually fine. From May to September popular trains sell out, and the desk has no extra seats.

Are Flåm Railway seats reserved?

Tickets are sold for one departure. Neither Vy nor the operator describes seat allocation; travellers report a mix of free and assigned seating, with group seats marked by the door.

Is the Flåm Railway included in Norway in a Nutshell?

Yes. The Fjord Tours package includes the Flåm Railway with the Bergen Line, a Nærøyfjord cruise and a bus. You do not need a separate train ticket.

Is there first class on the Flåm Railway?

Rail guides report one class only on the Flåm Railway. Plus seats exist on the Bergen Line trains that bring you to Myrdal.
