The Flåm Railway in winter 2026-27

From 1 November the Flåm Railway switches to its quiet season. Here is what changes, what the operator has and has not published yet, and which day trips from Bergen still run.

The Flåm Railway runs every day of the year, winter included. What changes from November is everything around the ride: fewer departures, lower fares, short days, a frozen waterfall instead of a dancer, and a handful of holiday dates with a reduced service.

This post sets out what we could confirm on 19 October 2026 for the winter of 2026-27, and where you still need to check the operator's own pages before you book.

The quick answer

The train keeps running daily through winter 2026-27, but with fewer departures: the 2025 winter pattern was 4 a day each way, against 6 in October 2026. Exact winter times for November 2026 to March 2027 are not clearly published yet, so check your date on the operator's or Vy's journey planner. Winter was the cheapest fare season on the 2025 list. There is no Huldra show, and 24, 25 and 31 December have fewer trains.

What changes on the Flåm Railway from November 2026?

Fewer trains, lower fares and short days. The line keeps running daily, but on the 2025 pattern winter had 4 departures each way instead of 6 to 10.

Both Vy and the operator, Norway's Best say the trains run every day, all year. The ride is the same 20.2 km and about an hour between Myrdal and Flåm. What shrinks is the timetable.

October 2026 has six departures each way, from Flåm at 08:20, 09:35, 10:50, 12:10, 14:45 and 16:00. In the official 2025 timetable, the winter months dropped to four: from Flåm at 09:00, 11:45, 14:30 and 16:50, and from Myrdal at 10:15, 13:15 and 15:39, with a last train at 18:05 (or 19:28 on Fridays and Sundays). Expect something close to that this winter, and plan around it rather than around the October times.

With four trains a day, missing one costs you two or three hours on a cold platform at Myrdal, which has no road. Leave a real buffer if you connect from the Bergen Line.

Is the winter 2026-27 timetable published yet?

Only partly. The operator lists a 1 November 2026 to 31 March 2027 period, but its page shows the same six times as October, and no 2026 timetable PDF is online.

On 19 October 2026 the timetable page on norwaysbest.com lists the date ranges for the coming year, from 1 November 2026 to 31 March 2027, then on into 2027 and 2028. Each range carries the same six departures as October. We do not read that as a confirmed winter timetable. The 2025 PDF had a separate four-train winter table, and the 2026 PDF link returns an error.

One clue points the other way. The Fjordrive winter tour says its group boards the Flåm Railway at 14:30 from November, and Fjordrive's year-round listing gives 14:30 for 1 November to 12 December. That is the 2025 winter departure, not October's 14:45. A tour company booking groups onto the train is a good sign that the winter pattern is coming back.

What to do: search your exact date on vy.no or Entur, which show the departures that are actually on sale. Everyrail notes that tickets normally go on sale about 120 days ahead, so a date far in the future may simply not be bookable yet.

Prefer someone else to juggle the winter timetable? The winter tour books the train for you and gets you back to Bergen by about 18:20.

What does the Flåm Railway look like in winter?

Snow higher up, a frozen or half-frozen Kjosfossen, no Huldra and very short days. Flåm itself, at sea level, is often just wet.

Myrdal sits at 867 m and Flåm at 2 m, so the train runs from one climate into another in an hour. Myrdal is often white when the fjord is grey and rainy, but no one can promise snow on a given date, least of all in November.

The train still stops at Kjosfossen all winter. Fjord Tours says the falls often freeze solid, which gives the stop a quieter feel, and that the Huldra performance is summer only. Watch your footing on the platform: it can be icy.

Light is the bigger limit. Around the shortest day the sun is up for well under six hours, and the steep valley walls hide it for much of that. The 09:00 and 11:45 departures (on the 2025 pattern) are the ones to take if you want to see the valley; the last train runs mostly in the dark.

Myrdal, at 867 m, often has snow when Flåm at the fjord has none. Times in the table are calculated for Flåm with a flat horizon.

Do trains run on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year's Eve?

Yes, but fewer. The operator says there are fewer departures on 24, 25 and 31 December, without saying which ones are cut.

The operator's timetable page has one line on it: "Fewer departures on December 24, 25 and 31." It does not list the remaining trains. On these days we would not plan a same-day connection from Bergen with no slack, and we would book the exact departure as soon as it goes on sale.

Other parts of the classic loop thin out too. Norway's Best warns that the Nærøyfjord boat can change its route at short notice in winter, running a return trip from Flåm with a bus link to Gudvangen instead of sailing through. The Njardarheimr Viking village in Gudvangen is closed in winter except for groups, which is why it only appears on winter tours, not on a do-it-yourself day.

Which Flåm Railway day trips run from Bergen in winter?

The Fjordrive winter tour, the Fjordrive minibus loop until 12 December, and the classic guided loop, which adapts its route from October to April.

Three of the day trips on this site run in the dark months, each with its own catch.

The winter tour is the obvious pick. The listing says it leaves Strandkaien 1 in Bergen at 08:00, visits the Viking village, sails from Gudvangen to Flåm by electric boat, takes the 14:30 train up to Myrdal and the Bergen Line home, arriving at 18:17. It also says, honestly, that snow is not guaranteed in October and November.

The Fjordrive minibus loop is the same route under a different listing and runs from April to 12 December. The classic guided loop runs all year and is the only one that rides the train downhill; its listing says that from October to April the route may change for weather and ice, with the bus stopping at Voss rather than Tvindefossen.

If one day feels rushed for the light you get, Fjord Tours sells a two-day "Winter Fjords & Flåm" round trip from Bergen with a night in Flåm, November to March. Check the current price on its product pages.

What should you check before booking a winter trip?

Your exact departure on Vy or Entur, the fare for your date, the boat route, and how much daylight you will actually have.

Our short list for November 2026 to March 2027:

  • The departure itself. Search your date on vy.no or Entur, not a timetable from last summer.
  • The fare. Winter was the cheapest season on the 2025 list, with half fares for ages 6 to 17. Vy now shows a single "from" fare that is not on that list. Our post on 2026 fares explains the gap.
  • Holiday dates. 24, 25 and 31 December have fewer trains.
  • The fjord boat. Winter route changes happen at short notice.
  • A buffer at Myrdal. With four trains a day, a late Bergen Line train can cost you hours.
